Ik vergeet nooit dat een bekende Engelse kweker die massa's prijzen heeft gewonnen op de AGS shows mij ooit toevertrouwde over Lewisia's : "They're gross feeders" - vrij vertaald : "het zijn grote eters".  Dat heb ik in mijn geheugen geprent en het legt geen windeieren bij het kweken van Lewisia's !  ;)
Ik heb hier ooit op een al oudere Cotyledon potplant 115 (honderd vijftien !) bloeistengels geteld.  Dat trek je als plant natuurlijk niet zonder bijkomende voeding.
Jouw theorie voor wat tuf betreft klopt ongetwijfeld voor een groot deel.
Die zaailing die ik hoger vermeldde heeft zich "tussen" de stenen gezaaid en kan dus vrijuit wortelen.  Maar gezien hij toch heel kalkrijk staat, zie ik tot nu toe geen echte aversie tegen kalk.  Nog een paar jaar wachten hoe de plant zich verder ontwikkelt, zal nog meer klaarheid brengen hierover.

Michael, interesting information about the raised bed! 15cm is a very thick layer stone chips, is that for air circulation a round the roots and for keeping them dry? have you neither problems whit the center of your plants ware the leafs are joined on the root?
keep you different specie's or only your hybrids ( what ar the parent plants you use for creating your hybrids)

I live on the west coast of Ireland.( It rains every day ;D) and we get a lot of rain,and Lewisias need good drainage. The Hybs do better than the Species as one of the parents is usually Brachycalyx and it don't mind the wet conditions.When Brachycalyx is crossed with any of the others the resulting plants are always evergreen and repeating flowering. They can tolerate wet conditions much better than the species which is why I produced them. When Rediviva is crossed with Longipetala or any of the others the resulting offspring are also evergreen and much more tolerant of the wet. The breeding of Lewisias can get very complex and is a subject that largely been ignored,as they would appear to have gone out of fashion. All the Lewisias will cross with each other with the exception of Tweedyii

Eigenlijk geen exoten liefhebber, wel een varenliefhebber en daar horen nu eenmaal ook boomvarens bij, de cycads dat is een ander verhaal hoe die bij mij gekomen zijn! en in de evolutie staan ze zeer dicht bij de varens van daar dat ik ze ook heb, en nu  rotsplanten, eigenlijk hebben die mij altijd wel geboeid, een 27 jaar geleden ben ik al eens gestart met rotsplanten maar door de bouw toen van ons huis had ik zeer veel werk daar ik bijna alles zelf heb gedaan, en als je geen tijd hebt om alles te kunnen onderhouden zoals het moet dan sterft zo'n project op den duur een stille dood.
Maar nu ben ik onder tussen halftijds aan het werken en heb ik veel tijd om m'n oude droom terug op te starten! en dat is waar ik nu mee bezig ben 400m² van m'n tuin omvormen naar een rotstuin.
